Can CBD Oil Help with Pain?

This is a question I hear again and again.

I’ve been researching, creating, testing, and using holistic practices for health and healing my whole adult life. I started working with the full cannabis plant in 1996. As a long-time holistic health practitioner who specializes in soft tissue repair I was well aware of the healing properties of plant medicines.

I’ve seen up close and personal how pain, in its many manifestations, molds and shapes the life experience of people who suffer from it.

Many of the people I work with and talk to wonder if CBD can provide relief from chronic pain. These folks are curious about CBD as an alternative to opioids and pharmaceuticals. The questions they have usually boil down to this: does it really work?

The body and cannabinoids are nature’s match

The reason why cannabidiol, or CBD, works as a natural way to manage the health of our nervous system (including chronic and acute pain) is that the human body is built to produce and receive cannabinoids.

To explore this, let’s take a brief walk into the history of cannabinoid research.

In 1964, Raphael Mechoulam (an organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry) made three important discoveries:

He identified the endocannabinoid system in the human body, along with how it functions

He discovered that the body naturally produces cannabinoids (we call these endogenous cannabinoids or endocannabinoids)

He found cannabinoid receptors exist everywhere in the body!

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) governs everything that happens in our body. It oversees the endocrine system, the nervous system, the immune system. Endocannabinoids are compounds manufactured by our body to keep the ECS running.

The human body also has cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) with various roles to play. They are responsible for all of our moods, motor functions, memory, white blood cell count, and immune system.

When these receptors are not firing, our bodies' systems start to malfunction. Because of the complexity of the human body, every person will have a different response. Some people may get cranky or show signs of depression. One person may have fatigue, another insomnia. And others may find their pain condition exacerbated.

CBD for Pain Relief

When our system gets depleted, and we are not producing the cannabinoids needed to repair and restore, we have another option. We can turn to our plant friends for their phytocannabinoids which mimics the endocannabinoids naturally produced in our body.

What we know is that supplementing with CBD boosts the ECS and helps the body return to homeostasis. When the body is in homeostasis, it can begin the healing and repairing process so the body can be free of illness, disease and pain.

Best CBD products for pain

CBD oils, tinctures, and edibles are a remarkable way to address chronic pain disorders, especially when used consistently over time. You also might want to experiment with CBD combinations because of the synergistic effects of using cannabis medicine.

Supersonic Nerve Tonic is wonderful for reducing inflammation and improving overall nerve health. It’s also great for spot treating issues like insomnia, pain, and anxiety.
